WYNNE, Ark. — Mayor Jennifer Hobbs defeated a recall attempt Tuesday by a group highly critical of her response to the 2023 tornado that ravaged Wynne. The vote was 1,627 votes against the removal versus 1,217 for removal. Hobbs says she is glad to claim victory over what she calls a contentious recall motion sponsored by a group called Always a Jacket. "There was a lot of people that were misled as to what they were signing in the petition," Hobbs said, "but we're going to put that behind us. Not going to hold any grudges. We're going to move forward. We have a job to do." ► Full Election Results The initiative centered on concerns over the Mayor's response to the deadly March 2023 tornado in Wynne. "Obviously those weren't the results we wanted. The members of Always a Jacket felt like the city of Wynne needed new leadership," said Princella Smith, co-founder of Always a Jacket. Hobbs says she was accused of not doing enough to help families after the tornado by not applying for grants for rebuilding homes. "There is no home grant the city can apply for," Hobbs said. "We are not allowed to put money into individual, personal rebuilding of homes. That's just illegal." Wynne, AR residents submit petition for removal of mayor Smith says one of her chief complaints involves the city's intention to not replace a multi-purpose building in a Ward 4 park with the nearly half a million dollars the city received. "She received it from the insurance company and from FEMA. She claimed the contents of the building and she did this fraudulently," Smith said. Hobbs said that's untrue. "She has indicated that I have stolen their money, I have misappropriated their money, all of which things are untrue," Hobbs said. "The money is sitting in a CD. We have a number of CDs from our general fund that are invested." She said it hasn't been decided how the money will be invested in the community. Smith said her group will continue to hold Mayor Hobbs accountable.
