HCFD: Man dies in house fire, no working smoke detectors found in home

Hartford City, Ind. — The Hartford City Fire Department confirmed on Wednesday that a man died in a house fire that took place Saturday morning.
According to HCFD, firefighters were called around 9:20 a.m. on Saturday to a residence on the 500 block of S Monroe St. This followed the report of a possible house fire. The department said light smoke was coming from the building and firefighters were "...met with low visibility and hoarding conditions" upon arrival.
One victim was removed from the residence's living room and taken to an area hospital. On Wednesday, HCFD confirmed that the victim has since died and identified him as 63-year-old Phillip J. Curtis.
No pictures were provided and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
HCFD also added that Curtis did not have a working smoke detector in his home. They wished to remind citizens to install smoke detectors and ensure they are working.
