LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A physician from Indiana has been federally indicted in a drug trafficking operation involving the illegal distribution of oxycodone and other drugs.
According to a news release from the Western District of Pennsylvania for the U.S. Attorney's Office, 82-year-old Martin J. Maasen of Lafayette is one of several names in two separate indictments implicating 12 individuals from western Pennsylvania.
The indictments allege the charged individuals were behind a drug conspiracy that was in operation from January 2019 to July 2024 and from December 2019 to July 2024. One of the indictments, which featured 22 different counts, alleged the operation involved the distribution of oxycodone.
Meanwhile, Maasen was preliminarily charged with unlawful distribution of Adderall. Maasen could face a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years, a fine worth $1 million or both.
“The allegations in these indictments are serious and deeply concerning,” said Thomas Hodnett, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Philadelphia Field Division. “Dr. Maassen stands accused of unlawfully distributing powerful painkillers such as oxycodone and amphetamines such as Adderall. Doctors such as Maassen have a legal and moral obligation to prescribe these drugs for legitimate medical purposes and within the usual course of professional practice; Maassen allegedly did neither. The unlawful distribution of oxycodone has contributed to the opioid crisis that has so adversely affected our communities.”
