NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A man charged in the killing of a North Charleston sanitation worker is back in the Lowcountry after being extradited from New York. Tyrell Lamont Smith, 24, was scheduled to appear before a bond court judge Wednesday morning on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. It stems from a July 18 shooting that claimed the life of a city public works employee. Man charged in killing of North Charleston sanitation worker returned to SC New details provided through affidavits purport to show the victim – 26-year-old Da’Twan Gatling – had been threatened by Smith on social media. Family members also told detectives that Smith had previously shot at Gatling. But the extent of those threats is unknown. Officers with the North Charleston Police Department responded to an address on Dorchester Road around 10 a.m. after receiving a crash notification from an iPhone. While en route, Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch took several calls about shots fired near Whitwil Boulevard. At the scene, officers found a city sanitation truck crashed into a tree – the victim, Gatling, was still inside suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Gatlin was taken to Trident Hospital and died while in surgery. Meanwhile, documents show multiple 9mm shell casings were found at a second crime scene on Bayfield Drive. Detectives reviewed video footage that was obtained from the neighborhood and sanitation truck that showed Smith leave his mother’s house and cross the road toward Bayfield Drive before several gunshots were heard. He was then seen running away from Bayfield Drive, documents show. Family members interviewed by detectives stated that the victim told them Smith previously shot at him. “They knew of previous threats on social media made by the defendant toward the victim and the victim’s family and were able to provide a picture of the defendant,” the affidavit said. Gatling was a public works employee collecting trash on Bayfield Drive when he was shot. Police say he tried to leave the area in his garbage truck after the shooting, but lost control on Dorchester Road and crashed into a tree. Smith was arrested in New York on Aug. 1 and was extradited to South Carolina on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
