ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) -- While Republicans are set to regain power in the U.S. Senate, Democrats clinched a victory in Virginia as the results from Tuesday's election were being tallied. Incumbent Senator Tim Kaine (D) has secured another six years in the Senate, marking his third win since being elected in 2012. "I was worried a little bit, but he's really great, so I'm so glad," said Virginia resident Magda, who opted not to give her last name. "At this point, at least, we have stayed, you know, the way we have stayed. And, that's very good- that shows really good government in Virginia." Kaine defeated Republican Hung Cao, the retired Navy captain, with 57% of the vote. President-elect Donald Trump had endorsed Cao for the seat. “I was hopeful Cao will take the seat, but this is the beauty of this country, that power can be divided between parties, and everyone will have a seat," Virginia resident Karim Tawazros told DC News Now. "That's why I'm very happy that we have a republic-- that everyone is represented.” 2024 Key Race Results Kaine has a long history of serving in public office in Virginia. He first served on Richmond’s City Council and, later, as the city's mayor. He then became the lieutenant governor before serving as the governor of the Commonwealth. After the results came in, both candidates weighed in. Kaine told crowds, “You may or may not, over the course of the next six years, agree or disagree with this or that, but I won’t embarrass you. I won't let you down.”In his concession speech, Cao said, “Look, we fought the good fight. You know, we finished the race, and we kept the faith. That's all that matters.” Cao previously ran unsuccessfully against Virginia congresswoman Jennifer Wexton for the 10th Congressional District seat in 2022.
