NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Winter Storm Warnings are widespread across New Mexico, including The Albuquerque Metro, as snow, gusty winds, and cold air will be the main threats later today especially, eventually leading to slippery roadways with some power outages. The strongest storm system of the season, which will bring in the most snow and coldest air for many thus far, is quickly approaching from the northwest of The Four Corners, but as it approaches The Land of Enchantment, it will become cutoff from the southward dip in the jet stream, allowing for moisture to pile on on. Out in front of this storm system, it's mostly not quite as cold as a start, but it's cold enough for snow to already start accumulating with 30 mph wind gusts in the far Northeast Highlands especially, The Northern Mountains, as well as the communities in The Western Mountains. As the trough of low pressure slows down while moving into Northwest New Mexico later today into early tomorrow, a breezy Pacific Cold front from the northwest will arrive first, then a gusty backdoor front from the northeast, with widespread rain with rumbles of thunder in south-central areas, but with even more-widespread lower-elevation accumulating wet snow ahead as temperatures will drop even more later today. Before then, temperatures will widely vary while reaching the upper 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and lower 70 degrees from north-northwest to south-southeast in lower elevation. Unsettled weather will eventually depart as improving conditions will slowly dry out while warming up this weekend.
