RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim and detained a person of interest in the deadly shooting outside of the Richmond City Justice Center on Monday, Nov. 4. Twenty-eight-year-old Naim Crews, Jr., of Richmond, was detained by police in the Fairmount neighborhood on Monday afternoon -- after receiving information about his involvement in a separate shooting on Sunday, Nov. 3. Richmond police officers and detectives, along with Major Crimes detectives investigating the parking lot homicide, determined Crews was a person of interest in that shooting also. At 11:38 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, a worker at a convenience store in the 1400 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike reported that a man had entered the store demanding money and started shooting. The convenience store employee reportedly fired back at the suspect and was injured. Richmond police said the suspect was not injured and fled the area. Once officers arrived at the scene, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. After an investigation, Crews was charged with attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony for the shooting on Mechanicsville Turnpike. On Wednesday, Nov. 6, police identified the victim in the Richmond jail parking lot homicide as 34-year-old Timothy Ward of Henrico County. Police said charges for Crews in this case are currently pending. On Monday, Nov. 4, at 12:04 p.m., a detective with Richmond police was in the parking lot of the Richmond jail -- located at the 1700 block of Fairfield Way. As he was walking towards the building, he heard a gunshot close by and went to investigate. In the parking lot, close to the roadway, the detective found Ward down and unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Richmond police detectives are still investigating both cases, the homicide and the aggravated assault at the convivence store.
