Search and rescue: "Our priority is rescuing humans not vehicles"
Nov 06, 2024
(TELLER COUNTY, Colo.) — Teller County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) posted to social media on Wednesday, Nov. 6, hoping to reach 4x4 enthusiasts with some safety tips should they choose to go off-roading in Southern Colorado.
First, TCSAR reminded drivers to go with a friend, and to let someone know where they are going and when they are expected to return. "We did have an incident with four stuck Tundras though so..." TCSAR wrote.
Next, drivers should pack supplies for all members of their group, including babies and pets, for at least 24 hours, and to prepare for the worst anticipated weather.
4x4 enthusiasts should also be prepared to get out and walk should there be a situation where their car gets stuck. "Flip flops and tank tops are not okay, ask how we know," joked TCSAR.
Rescue crews said that it's critical drivers communicate which road or trail they plan to be on, prior to venturing out. "It could take hours for us to locate and rescue you once you make contact with 911," TCSAR wrote. "Phone-based GPS is often unreliable on the south side of Pikes Peak and often we have to search to locate you."
Lastly, drivers should always leave with a full tank of gas and use chains that fit their vehicles.
"Weather in Colorado Springs is not the weather on Gold Camp, Rainbow Falls, or Hackett Gulch," warned TCSAR. "Our priority is rescuing humans not vehicles."
