MARYLAND (DC News Now) -- Democrat Angela Alsobrooks won the Maryland U.S. Senate race, beating out Republican opponent Larry Hogan, according to the Associated Press. Alsobrooks, who serves as the county executive for Prince George's County, made history as the first Black person elected to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate. 2024 Maryland Election Results Alsobrooks took to the stage at her Election Night headquarters in College Park shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. "Doesn't it feel good to be in Maryland tonight?" asked Alsobrooks as she addressed the crowd in front of her. Alsobrooks offered a long list of thanks to people who worked to help her win the election and offered a "special shout-out" to her hometown. "You know, I woke up this morning to my neighbors who lined my street and hosted a pep rally for me as I left my neighborhood, and I want you to know that this is the Prince George's County that I have known, the people who cheer each other on, where greatness grows," Alsobrooks said. "At times we struggle together, and we work to build a better future for all of our children, and to those Marylanders whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote, but I want you to know that I hear your voice, and I will be your senator, too." Alsobrooks ran against Hogan, Mayrland's former governor, to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) after Cardin announced that he would not seek re-election in 2023. Hogan conceded the race to Alsobrooks Tuesday night shortly after he spoke to her. Hogan told his supporters he congratulated her on a "hard-fought victory." Hogan said, "Tonight, regardless of who you voted for, we can all take pride in the election of the first Black woman to reprsent Maryland in the United States Senate." The competitive race garnered national attention, as experts said it had the potential to shift the balance of power in the Senate. "As governor, I had the privilege of working closely with Angela. She's a dedicated public servant, and all of us should wish her much success," Hogan stated, adding that "now is the time for us to come together and to move forward as one state and as one nation, to respect the will of the voters and the outcome of the democratic process." Hogan thanked all his supporters, calling on them to give themselves a round of applause.
