NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – For the first time in four years, every single seat in the state legislature is up for re-election. That's 42 seats in the Senate and 70 in the House, and Republicans are looking to gain ground. KRQE News 13 has a breakdown of some key races. KRQE's Election Coverage Democrats have maintained control over the legislature for the last several election cycles; but this time around, Republicans are hoping to make some in-roads—especially after redistricting. Starting in the metro area with Senate District 12, previously held by Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino, Republican Jay Block who's also a Sandoval County Commissioner is leading over Democrat Phillip Ramirez on Tuesday night. This was previously a Democratic-controlled seat covering downtown Albuquerque but the district now covers parts of the Westside and Rio Rancho. Down in southwest New Mexico covering Silver City, Lordsberg, and Deming, Republican Gabriel Ramos is leading over Democrat Chris Ponce. Ramos was previously appointed to fill a Senate seat as a Democrat. Over in the House, Republican Rebecca Dow is leading Democratic incumbent Tara Jaramillo. Dow previously held the seat before leaving to unsuccessfully run for governor in 2022. In Las Cruces, Democratic Senator Carrie Hamblen is struggling to hold on to her seat against Republican Samantha Barncastle Salopek, and Democratic Representative Nathan Small is trailing behind Republican challenger Kimberly Skaggs. District 53, another open seat that was previously controlled by a Democrat in the White Sands area, is also being led by Republican candidate Elizabeth Winterrowd who is facing off against Democratic candidate Sarah Silva. Despite the possible GOP "flips," Democrats would likely still maintain the clear majority. Last session, they had a 20-seat majority in the House and a 12-seat edge over Republicans in the Senate.
