RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Democrat Kamala Harris has won Virginia and its 13 electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election, according to The Associated Press. The AP called the race in Virginia for Vice President Harris over former President Donald Trump after 11:40 p.m., nearly five hours after polls closed. In 2020, the AP called the race for President Joe Biden in under 40 minutes. The victory in Virginia adds 13 electoral votes to Harris’s tally as the candidates try to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold needed to win the presidential race. Harris’s victory continues the winning streak of Democratic presidential candidates in Virginia, who haven’t lost since George W. Bush (R), then an incumbent president, won the commonwealth in 2004. Four other candidates were on Virginia’s presidential ballot: Green Party candidate Jill E. Stein, Libertarian Chase R. Oliver, independent candidate Claudia De la Cruz and independent candidate Cornel R. West. All election results are unofficial until certified. This story is breaking. Check back for updates.
