LIVE BLOG: Election Day 2024
Hopkins, who has served as mayor since he was first elected 2020, campaigned on a promise to improve city finances, along with education and the economy. He faced criticism throughout the campaign from political opponents over his handling of the city budget and some services, along with a controversy involving a car he acquired but never paid for.
Ferri, a two-term city councilor, told voters he would improve the school system, parks and infrastructure and eliminate wasteful spending. He spent much of the campaign leveling criticism at Hopkins who he argued has been detrimental to the overall health of the city.
Republicans have dominated Cranston mayoral elections throughout the past half-century: the city has had a GOP mayor for all but six years since 1963, when John F. Kennedy was president.
