PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Democratic incumbent Seth Magaziner has won the race for Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District seat, 12 News projects.
Magaziner defeated Republican Steven Corvi.
"I am honored by the trust and confidence the voters of Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District have placed in me to serve them for a second term in the United States House of Representatives," Magaziner said in a statement.
"As I return to Washington, I remain committed to fighting for the priorities that matter most to Rhode Islanders; protecting Social Security and Medicare, cutting costs for working people, protecting the Affordable Care Act, enacting common-sense gun safety legislation, and defending women’s right to choose," he continued.
Magaziner, 41, was first elected in 2022 when he won a close contest to succeed 11-term Democrat Jim Langevin. His legislative priorities to date have included mandatory paid time off, though he has faced criticism for failing to move into his district.
"Thank you to my family and my dedicated team for their support and hard work in making this possible, and to the people of Rhode Island for inspiring me every day," Magaziner added.
Corvi, an adjunct professor and political newcomer, had a low profile throughout the campaign after raising little money and receiving no significant support from national Republicans.
"To my supporters, donors, and volunteers – thank you. This campaign would not have been possible without you, and I’m incredibly grateful for the work, dedication, and belief you poured into this effort," Corvi said in a statement.
"We always knew this was going to be an uphill battle," he added. "While tonight’s outcome isn’t what we all hoped for, I’m incredibly proud of what we built and the conversations we sparked."
Corvi went on to congratulate Magaziner on his win and said that while it's the end of his campaign, it's not the end of his commitment to Rhode Island. "I will continue fighting for the change our state needs, finding new ways to push for the values we believe in."
