(WPRI) — Incumbent Christopher Beauchamp has won the race for Woonsocket mayor, according to preliminary results. At 9:15 p.m., Beauchamp's campaign manager said City Council President John Ward had called to the mayor concede the race. LIVE BLOG: Election Day 2024 The victory comes after a contentious race that pitted the incumbent mayor against the City Council president. Beauchamp, who formerly served as the council president, ascended to the city’s top job last year after then-Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt abruptly resigned amid a land-deal scandal. Beauchamp – a longtime friend of the former mayor – campaigned on the promise that he’s his own person and doesn’t have political allegiances to Baldelli-Hunt. He told voters he’d get Woonsocket back on stable financial footing, as the city has faced several challenges, including most recently when Moody’s Ratings ranked its bond rating. Ward, who earned the second most votes after Beauchamp in the nonpartisan primary election earlier this year, campaigned on the promise to bring a different leadership style to the mayor’s office. He argued the city has been operating under a cloud due to the leadership of the former mayor, and he spent his time on the campaign trial trying to convince voters that his opponent represents a continuous of the old ways.
