(WPRI) — Vice President Kamala Harris has overwhelmingly won Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the Associated Press projects. Harris has secured roughly 53% of the vote so far in the Ocean State, as opposed to former President Donald Trump's 45%. Her lead over Trump was even more significant in Massachusetts, where she's already won nearly 70% of the vote. LIVE BLOG: Election Day 2024 The last time a Republican presidential candidate won Rhode Island was back in 1984, when former President Ronald Reagan defeated Vice President Walter Mondale. Reagan is also the only Republican to have carried Massachusetts since 1956. Rhode Island and Massachusetts have both become reliable gains for Democrats over the years, which is why presidential candidates rarely spend time campaigning in either state.
