Election 2024: Jim Banks projected as winner of Indiana U.S. Senate seat
Nov 05, 2024
INDIANAPOLIS -- A longtime Indiana Republican lawmaker is now projected to be one of Indiana's two U.S. Senators.
According to projections from the Associated Press, U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind. District 3, will be Indiana's newest member of the U.S. Senate. Banks is expected to join U.S. Senator Todd Young, R-Ind. as Indiana's two lawmakers in the U.S. Senate.
As of around 7:10 p.m., Banks has received 61.99% of the vote while Democratic candidate Valerie McCray received 36.02% of the vote. Andrew Horning, the Libertarian candidate, has received 1.99% of the vote.
Banks first announced his run for the position in January 2023. Banks, who also previously served in the Indiana State Senate, was first elected to the U.S. Congress in 2017.
During his campaign for the statewide seat, Banks has focused on the impact of inflation on Hoosiers, stating that inflation's current rate is tied to the "wasteful spending" by the federal government.
“Hoosiers are paying a lot more, even than our neighboring states, for the cost of groceries, the cost of gas,” he said at the time. “The housing crisis in our state is affected by inflation and other factors as well. The fact of the matter is that Hoosiers aren’t better off than what they were four years ago.
“So when, hopefully, Donald Trump goes back to the White House, with the majority in the United States Senate that I hope to be a part of, we can put policies back in place that bring down inflation and the cost of living for Hoosier families.”
As of this story's publication, the presidential race has not yet been called. Those results can be found here.
Banks also highlighted his foreign policy experience, stating that his history on the House Armed Services Committee will be beneficial if he is elected to the U.S. Senate.
McCray, a clinical psychologist, first announced her run for the U.S. Senate in January, highlighting that she would have been the first African American woman to represent Indiana in the U.S. Senate if she was elected.
Horning presented himself as an alternative to the two-party system as the race's Libertarian candidate. He focused his campaign on several issues, including foreign policy, abortion and term limits
In a statement from Banks, he said he is grateful for the support form his family and from Hoosiers across the state.
“Only in America can a kid like me, who grew up in a trailer park in Columbia City and was the first in my family to go to college, go on to become a United States Senator," Banks said in the statement. "As your next Senator, I will fight every day to protect that American dream for the next generation.
“We need true conservative fighters in Washington who are not afraid to cut reckless spending and fight to secure our border and end the Democrats’ border crisis," Banks continued. "I got in this race to champion working Hoosier families and put Indiana first, and that’s what I plan to do on day one in the United States Senate."
Banks spoke to supporters on Tuesday evening, stressing that Indiana deserves a conservative senator in the U.S. Senate fighting for its residents.
"I hope one day my daughters know we do this for them," Banks said. "This is the greatest country in the history of the world. and I refuse to be a part of the first generation in American history that will pass this country off to our kids in worse shape than we found it."
Banks said that as a member of the U.S. Senate, he would fight to make sure that they will be in a country that they are proud of.
"This is an incredible honor," Banks said. "But tomorrow, we roll up our sleeves and get to work. It is my prayer and my hope that tonight we send Donald Trump back to the White House, the greatest president of my lifetime. and I will be a part of his backup crew to put America first and get America back on track because of all of you."
In a statement from Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, he said that Banks has "a long history of strong public service" to the state and the United States.
"His work ethic, knowledge and leadership will be desperately needed in our Nations capital to seriously address the out of control $35T national debt, a border policy that lets in illegal abusers and keeps out legal aspiring U.S. immigrants, and an urgent need to modernize our national defense capabilities," Holcomb said.
