Nov 05, 2024
INDIANAPOLIS -- Hoosiers are making their voices heard in this year's General Election between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Current vote tallies project Donald Trump to win Indiana as he is leading with 62.1% (584,201 votes) compared to Harris' total of 36.1% (339,799 votes). Harris has been running to be elected the first female president of the United States.
Team Trump IN Spokesperson Liz Huston shared the following statement with FOX59/CBS4 Tuesday night.
"Congratulations to Donald J. Trump, Mike Braun, and Jim Banks on their victories. After four years under Kamala Harris, Hoosiers are eager for President Trump to fix what Kamala Harris broke. Starting on Day 1, President Trump and Vice President JD Vance will help to ease costs, secure the border — and Make America Great Again."
In the buildup to this year's general election, Trump campaigned on hot-button topics such as the economy, immigration and reducing crime. Harris' campaign focused on restoring abortion rights, safeguarding democracy and looking to bring "balance" back to politics.
Before Tuesday, Indiana and its 11 electoral votes represented an uphill task for Harris and the Democratic party considering Trump has won the previous two presidential elections in the Hoosier State.
Votes are continuing to be tallied across the state and country which can be viewed here.
In 2020, Trump won Indiana after securing 57% of the vote compared to Biden's tally of 41%. Trump also received 57% of the vote in 2016 while Hillary Clinton only recorded 38%.
Although Indiana has historically been a "red" state, it did flip in 2008 when Barack Obama won the vote after beating challenger John McCain by one percentage point. This marked the first time since 1964 that Indiana backed a Democratic candidate.
