Johnson, Kennedy appear headed to runoff in mayor race
Nov 05, 2024
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- Renard Johnson and Brian Kennedy continue to lead a crowded mayoral race for the City of El Paso and seem headed for a likely runoff after the latest round of voting totals were released at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Johnson, a political newcomer and business owner, leads with 56,769 votes or 33.23 percent. Brian Kennedy, a City Council member for District 1, is second with 42,208 or 24.71 percent.
If neither gets more than 50 percent of the vote, that would trigger a runoff election.
Six other candidates have 10 percent or less.
Cassandra Hernandez is in a distant third at 17,379 votes or 10.17 percent. Other candidates are: Steven B. Winters, 14,581 or 8.53 percent; Isabel Salcido, 12,051 or 7.05 percent; Marco Antonio Contreras with 10,628 votes or 6.22 percent; Elizabeth Cordova, 9.717 votes or 5.69 percent; and Ben Mendoza, with 7,511 votes or 4.40 percent.
Also on the ballot, the City of El Paso is asking voters for the authority to cancel the remaining $128.45 million in general obligation bonds that were initially approved for a multipurpose performing arts and entertainment facility in Downtown El Paso.
The measure to axe the Downtown arena appears headed to a big victory.
"Yes" means getting rid of the project and that is leading with 91,145 votes or 55.73 percent, while "no" trails with 72,388 or 44.27.
