Buckeyes ranked No. 2 in first College Football Playoff poll of 2024
Nov 05, 2024
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The first College Football Playoff rankings with a 12-team field coming this postseason were revealed on Tuesday night, and Ohio State was among the top teams.
The Buckeyes (7-1) were placed at No. 2 in the first playoff rankings, but they don't sit as the three-seed in the projected bracket. With Big Ten rival Oregon ranked No. 1, they're not projected to earn a top-four seed as a conference champion.
Buckeyes look ahead to Saturday’s game against Purdue
Instead, they sit as the five-seed and would play a first-round game on Dec. 20 or 21 at Ohio Stadium if they are still in that position when the final rankings are revealed on Dec. 8. Using the Nov. 5 poll, Ohio State would play Boise State, with the winner meeting BYU in a quarterfinal at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.
The Buckeyes are in good position for a playoff spot even with a second loss later this season. To see a full explanation on how the new 12-team format works, follow this link.

College Football Playoff bracket
The current CFP bracket has four Big Ten teams with Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State, and Indiana all in the field. One of those four teams will earn a bye into the CFP quarterfinals as the Big Ten champion. As things stand and barring any upsets, the winner of the Ohio State-Indiana game on Nov. 23 will play Oregon in the conference title game on Dec. 7.
No. 2 Ohio State is looking for its third straight win on Saturday when they host Purdue at noon. The Buckeyes are favored to win by more then five touchdowns against the last-place team in the Big Ten.
