A winter storm system makes its way into New Mexico tonight. The low pressure system will nudge its way into the four corners. This will bring rain and snow to the northwest this evening. Wednesday through Friday this low pressure will move from the four corners, to southeast Arizona, before centering itself over southwest New Mexico Friday afternoon.
The low pressure system will be aided by two cold fronts. A Pacific cold front will make its way through the state tonight and though Wednesday. A backdoor cold front will sweep through the eastern parts of New Mexico on Wednesday as well. These two fronts will be strong in bringing in much cooler air and breezy conditions.
A combination of the low pressure system and the two cold fronts will cause widespread rain and snow starting Wednesday and lasting through Friday. The higher elevations might see snowfall exceeding 18". Lower valley elevations could see a range of snowfall from 3 -12". Heavy snowfall is one of the main concerns of this storm system. Another main concern is blowing snow. The wind brought by the two cold fronts will be lasting through the day on Wednesday and Thursday.
Other concerns with this upcoming winter storm are snow and cold temperatures. Snow is forecasted to fall from the Northern Mountains to the Sacramento Mountains. With valley regions like the Metro expected to see at least some measurable snowfall Wednesday and Thursday. Low temperatures overnight and in the early morning will be freezing and below freezing for most.
Precipitation is likely to end Friday night. Precipitation on Saturday will be spotty at best in the Northern Mountains.
