Park City official sees potential Main Street work as most ambitious in decades
Nov 05, 2024
Park City is considering numerous improvements in the Main Street core that, if pursued, would change the complexion of the shopping, dining and entertainment strip. The work could be the most ambitious in decades, a member of the Park City Council said early in the week. City Councilor Ryan Dickey, the liaison to the Main Street Area Plan Committee, said in an interview the projects under discussion, taken together, would have a similar impact as the development of lower Main Street and the installation of the Town Bridge. The development of lower Main Street — north of the Heber Avenue intersection — and nearby ground fronting Park Avenue extended the tourism industry’s presence in Old Town. The growth there, over time, involved lodging, restaurants and retailers. There are also significant private-sector garages along lower Main Street or just off the street that add parking spots to the overall inventory.Marriott’s Summit Watch effectively serves as the anchor. The blacktop of lower Main Street is also the location of the Park Silly Sunday Market and has been the location of celebrations and concerts.Lower Main Street eventually provided the opportunity for Park City Mountain to install the Town Bridge more than 20 years ago. The bridge connects the Park City Mountain slopes to the street, easing access to the resort for skiers and snowboarders staying in the Main Street core or those living there. It is located at the bottom of the Town Lift terrain. The Town Bridge made it simpler for someone to begin or end the ski day on Main Street as well as providing another lunch option for people at Park City Mountain.“It would be really significant,” Dickey said as he compared the projects the Main Street Area Plan Committee is discussing to the development of lower Main Street and the Town Bridge. There was controversy in the 1990s as lower Main Street was developed, with some worrying there would be a divide between the historic section of Main Street south of the Heber Avenue intersection and the new section north of the intersection. Crowds on the historic section of Main Street at many times of the year still appear to far outnumber those on lower Main Street, but there has also seemed to be progress on lower Main Street over time with the development of additional lodging and businesses as well as with the success of the Silly Market. The Main Street Area Plan Committee is attempting to craft blueprints for the future amid competition from the bases at the mountain resorts and outlying commercial destinations. Some of the ideas under consideration involve major capital projects like housing developments in the Main Street core and a gondola link to Deer Valley Resort.City Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 12, is scheduled to host two engagement sessions designed to gather opinions from the public about the Main Street Area Plan. The sessions run from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Miners Hospital. More information is available on the municipal website, parkcity.org.
