Rain chances ramp up into the midweek
Nov 05, 2024
It was another record setting day across Central and Eastern Kentucky as folks enjoyed summer-like conditions on Election Day. With sunshine and a strong south wind gusting over 30 miles per hour at times, afternoon highs ran back into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees for much of the area. We reached record temperatures for the 3rd straight day here in Lexington as our afternoon high reached 80 degrees, besting the old record of 81 set back in 1977. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the dry and unseasonably warm weather as we have some changes heading into the mid to late week.
A frontal system that has been camped out to our west will finally move enough eastward progressing to increase our chances for showers and a few thunderstorms into Wednesday. Widespread activity should crank up into the early hours of Wednesday so look for a wet overnight period with occasional rain continuing throughout the day. We should be set-up for some decent rainfall totals with many locations seeing close to 1″ or more. You’ll want to keep the rain gear handy as it should be damp at times throughout the day. Temperatures will still be above average into the low 70s but not as warm as we’ve seen the last few days.
The frontal boundary will stall out over the Ohio Valley into Thursday keeping the chances for scattered showers around in the process. While it shouldn’t be an all day rain, numerous showers will still be possible especially during the morning hours before the activity begins to wind down a bit as the front starts to drift to the east. With additional clouds and rain around, afternoon highs will drop back slightly into the upper 60s. Our weather should improve to end the week as we’ll be in between systems on Friday. With sunshine around it should be a pleasant day with highs in the upper 60s, setting us up for a nice evening for the first round of high school football playoffs across the commonwealth.
More unsettled weather is on tap for the weekend as another storm system gets cranked up in the Central Plains and moves eastward. We’ve seen several nice fall weekends over the last month but the upcoming one may be a bit damp and dreary with more rain and a few rumbles of thunder expected Saturday and Sunday. One ex factor will be the potential of some tropical moisture funneling northward from the Gulf of Mexico as tropical system Rafael may close to the gulf coast. This could funnel additional moisture our way and increase the amount of rain we see but at this point the data isn’t synced up with how things may play out. No matter what it appears we’ll be dodging some rain this weekend with highs remaining above average in the upper 60s.
