FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- The Allen County Coroner's Office has identified an infant that was discovered on Fort Wayne's south side more than 22 years ago.
The infant, only identified by the coroner's office as "Baby John Doe," was discovered March 14, 2002, in the 4000 block of Calumet Avenue.
Using next-generation sequencing, the Indiana State Police (ISP) Laboratory was able to identify the infant as well as the father.
Cause and manner of death in Allen County skeletal remains investigation still undetermined
The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) interviewed the father and learned the whereabouts of the infant's mother, whose identity was also confirmed by the ISP Laboratory. During the FWPD investigation, the mother -- who was a juvenile at the time of the incident -- said her child was stillborn.
According to the Allen County Coroner's Office, an autopsy from 2002 could not confirm if the child had ever been alive, and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office determined there is no criminal liability at this time after reviewing the case.
