Week 11 #9OT Game of the Week: Irvin vs. Clint
Nov 05, 2024
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — This week's 9 Overtime Game of the Week is a battle for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 1-4A Division I.
The Irvin Rockets (5-4, 4-3 District 1-4A DI) will play the Clint Lions (3-6, 3-4 District 1-4A DI) at Clint High School's Lion Stadium on Friday night.
Headed into the final week of District 1-4A DI play: Austin has clinched a share of the district title and can win it outright with a victory over San Elizario on Friday. Riverside clinched the No. 2 seed after a win over Ysleta last Friday. Ysleta locked in the No. 3 seed.
The No. 4 seed in the district is still up for grabs. Irvin currently holds onto that spot as it sits in fourth place in the district standings.
The Clint Lions do have a chance to steal that spot from Irvin and secure its ticket to the playoffs, but there is a twist.
Mountain View—who finished its regular season 5-5 overall and 4-4 in district—is also in the mix for a playoff spot, but their chances are low.
According to the 1-4A District Executive Committe (DEC), here are the playoff scenarios for Irvin, Clint, and Mountain View.
Irvin
Irvin win over Clint: Irvin secures No. 4 seed and advances to playoffs.
Irvin loss to Clint by 5 or less points: Irvin secures No. 4 seed and advances to playoffs.
Clint
Clint win over Irvin by 7 or more points: Clint secures No. 4 seed and advances to playoffs.
Mountain View
Clint win over Irvin by exactly 6 points: 3-way tie between Irvin, Clint, and Mountain View for No. 4 seed based on district record and net positive/negative points. The head coaches of the three teams will get together, flip a coin at the same time, the head coach that flips the odd coin gets their team the No. 4 seed and advances to the playoffs. This is the ONLY way Mountain View can get into the playoffs.
Here's a look at the 17-point team tie breaker system. This is from the 1-4A DEC Manual obtained by KTSM:
"E. In case of multiple ties and no team has defeated the other teams in head-to-head competition. The district representation shall be determined by net positive and negative points. Illustration of highest number of net positive and negative points (maximum number of points for one game is 17).

"Team A would be the highest seed because they have the highest number of positive points. Team B would be third highest seed and Team C would be fourth highest seed. Team D would be the second highest seed. If a tie still remains, then they will have a coin toss to break all ties."
Here is the look at the system in action for the Irvin, Clint, and Mountain View situation headed into the final week of District 1-4A DI play.

So, this is why points will be a very important thing to look at during Friday's game between Irvin and Clint. The simplistic way for Irvin to get into the playoffs is with a win outright over Clint. The simplistic way for Clint to get into the playoffs is by beating Irvin by 7 or more points on Friday.
Kickoff for the Irvin vs. Clint game at Lion Stadium on Friday is at 7:00 p.m. MT.
