State Board Votes To Extend Voting By 30 Minutes In 2 Precincts Including Burke County
Nov 05, 2024
The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted Tuesday to extend voting at a precinct in Burke County and a precinct in Wilson County for 30 minutes each.
Voting at the following precincts will be extended until 8 p.m.:
County: Wilson
Precinct/Address: Gardners School, 5404 NC 42 HWY E, Elm City, NC 27822
Voting was delayed this morning due to a temporary printer connection issue that led to poll workers not being able to print “authorization to vote” forms for voters to check in to vote.
County: Burke
Precinct/Address: Pilot Mountain, The Rock Church, 4806 US 64, Morganton, NC 28655
Voting was delayed this morning due to the temporary inability to boot up a laptop with the official pollbook used for checking in voters.
With more than 2,650 polling sites statewide, it is not unusual for minor issues to occur at polling sites that result in a brief disruption of voting. The State Board routinely meets to discuss the extension of hours when the need arises on Election Day.
G.S. § 163-166.01 authorizes the State Board to extend voting hours at sites where voting is interrupted for at least 15 minutes, but the Board may extend voting only as long as the disruption and only for the affected sites. All votes cast after 7:30 p.m. in these two precincts will be provisional votes, per state law.
The State Board will not publish unofficial results in Burke or Wilson counties until voting ends for these polling places. Results will be reported starting at 7:30 p.m. in the other 98 counties. For election results, click HERE.
