Mule Deer Foundation receives $750,000 grant
Nov 05, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) has received a $750,000 grant from the North Dakota Industrial Commission's Outdoor Heritage Fund — which will be used to help fix fencing problems that plague animals in the state.
The Mule Deer Foundation is the only conservation group in North America dedicated to preserving mule deer, black-tailed deer, and their habitats.
As the organization states, one of the most significant challenges these animals face is the presence of fences. While fences are important for many reasons, they can also hinder wildlife movement, causing stress, injuries, and in some cases, death.
The new grant was approved as part of the Outdoor Heritage Fund matching grants program, which is entirely funded by oil and gas production tax revenue.
Election: A quick look at the Measures
The foundation plans to use these funds to make fences safer for big game passage. Over the next five years, they hope to modify or construct over 60 miles of wildlife-friendly fencing, facilitating safe movement, and improving habitat connectivity in western ND.
“Making fences safer for big game passage and reducing habitat fragmentation are the objectives of this project," said Collin Smith, MDF's Director of Private Lands Projects. "By working with our partners, MDF will identify, and assist interested private landowners with technical and financial assistance to remove, modify, or construct new fences to wildlife-friendly designs.”
