BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- First-time drivers applying for their licenses at the DMV must answer if they want to be an organ, eye and tissue donor.
Their answers can save lives.
Lori Malkin, executive director of JJ’s Legacy, joined 17 News at Noon to invite the community to the 9th Annual Grillin’ and Brewin’ event to raise money for the organization.

JJ’s Legacy is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing organ, eye, and tissue donation awareness and registrations through programs like Got the Dot.
The Got the Dot program, initiated in 2016, responds to the crucial need for education on organ donation.
It prepares high school students to make informed decisions when applying for their driver's licenses and empowers them to become advocates for organ donation in their communities.
“Well, we have an amazing group of kids. It’s the Got the Dot Club,” Malkin said.
The Got the Dot Club features 28 students who work with JJ’s Legacy to raise awareness and registration.
“They are going to put on this Grillin’ & Brewin’ – they help us plan it, they are part of the committee, and the proceeds benefit our club, Malkin added.
At the end of the year, those students can qualify for scholarships to further their educations.
