The Detroit Lions have traded with the Cleveland Browns and acquired Za’Darius Smith and a 2026 draft pick in exchange for two draft picks, one in 2025 and another in 2026. The Browns reportedly were pushing for a fourth-round draft pick but Lions general manager Brad Holmes waited them out and got a better deal for his franchise. Here’s the terms of the trade: Lions get: DE Za’Darius Smith 7th round pick in 2026 Browns get: 5th round pick in 2025 6th round pick in 2026 The Lions have been very active with their 2025 draft capital as they make a run toward the Super Bowl, trading away four draft picks and acquiring two in the last seven months. Let’s take a look at the movement with those picks: 2025 Detroit Lions draft picks movement: First-round pick Second-round pick Third-round pick — traded to Jets for Giovanni Manu Fourth-Round pick from Eagles (D’Andre Swift trade) — traded back to the Eagles to draft Sione Vaki Fourth-round pick Fifth-round pick — Traded to Browns for Za’Darius Smith Sixth-round pick — Traded to Browns for Donovan Peoples-Jones Sixth-round pick (from Buccaneers) — Acquired as part of Carlton Davis trade Seventh-round pick Seventh-round pick (from Cowboys) — Acquired as part of trade-up for Terrion Arnold Holmes’ method to drafting tends to prioritize first and second-round picks while using picks from the third round and beyond as resources to acquire assets. Sometimes those assets are players—as is the case with Smith—other times they’re used to acquire more capital. As things stand right now, here are the Lions current 2025 draft picks: First round Second round Fourth round Sixth round (from Buccaneers) Seventh round Seventh round (from Cowboys) And if you’re curious, here are the Lions 2026 draft picks First round Second round Third round Fourth round Fifth round Seventh round (from Browns) Seventh round
