DOJ to monitor polls in Maryland, Virginia for voting rights compliance

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it plans to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws across 86 jurisdictions for the November 2024 General Elections.
According to the AP, this announcement comes as officials in some Republican-led states warned they might attempt to ban federal authorities from entering polling sites on Tuesday.

The department said on Election Day, the department will deploy staff to monitor for compliance with federal voting rights laws in 27 states including Virginia and Maryland.
DOJ said staff will be at the following locations on Tuesday:
Prince George’s County, Maryland
Hanover County, Virginia
Henrico County, Virginia
Loudoun County, Virginia
City of Manassas, Virginia
City of Manassas Park, Virginia
Prince William County, Virginia
According to the department, monitors include personnel from the Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney's office and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management. The division's voting section enforces the civil provisions of federal statutes that protect the right to vote.

Throughout Election Day, Civil Rights Division personnel will be available for questions and complaints from the public related to possible violations of federal voting rights laws.
