Kansans line up to vote on Election Day
Nov 05, 2024
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Polls in Kansas opened at 7 a.m. Some counties, including Sedgwick, opened at 6 a.m.
Both polling locations where KSN News crews were stationed this morning had lines. KSN News talked to one voter.
"An important election, incredibly important election, so I'm here to vote my conscience on all the candidates and issues that are out there," Mark Nale, a voter, said.
Sedgwick County Election Commissioner reported that things were running smoothly as of late morning and that voters had been getting through the lines in about 10 minutes.
"We have had just about 35,000 Election Day voters come through the polls this morning," Rainwater said. "That's about 8,000 an hour, so we're processing the voters really well and really quickly."
Rainwater adds that if you have a mail-in ballot, make sure it gets postmarked by today or returned to a ballot drop box or a polling site by 7 p.m.
Rainwater says the first election report we will receive from the county will be between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m. Those will be early in-person and mail ballot votes. Other results will be reported as they arrive at the election office.
"Our election workers are the true heroes," Rainwater added. "Because without them, this election would not be running so smoothly."
Election Day 2024: What you need to know
Races Kansans are deciding on
President
Republican former President Donald Trump hopes to win Kansas and its six electoral votes for the third consecutive presidential election on Nov. 5. He is running against Vice President Kamala Harris, who faces an uphill battle in a state that hasn't backed a Democratic presidential candidate for 60 years. Trump won 56% of the vote in 2020 and 57% in 2016, sweeping nearly every county in the state.
U.S House
Republicans hold both U.S. Senate seats and three of the four U.S. House seats in the state. Neither Senate seat is on the ballot, but three incumbent representatives are up for reelection. Rep. Jake LaTurner announced his retirement earlier this year, so the 2nd Congressional District seat is open. That race features Democrat Nancy Boyda, Republican Derek Schmidt, and Libertarian John Hauer.
Republican Rep. Ron Estes is running against Democrat Esau Freeman in the 4th Congressional District. The 1st Congressional District race features Republican Rep. Tracey Mann against Democrat Paul Buskirk. In the 3rd Congressional District, Democrat Rep. Sharice Davids is battling to keep her seat against Republican Prasanth Reddy and Libertarian Steve Roberts.

State Legislature
Despite the run of Republican victories for presidential candidates in Kansas, several Democrats have been elected governor in recent decades, including two-term Gov. Laura Kelly, who isn’t up for election this year.
In the state Legislature, Republicans vastly outnumber Democrats in the state Senate and state House, enough to override any vetoes by Kelly, but Democrats could break the GOP supermajority by flipping just a few seats in either chamber. All 40 state Senate seats and 125 state House seats are up for election in November.
Conservatives could win control of Kansas state school board
State Board of Education
Voters will also decide several races for the State Board of Education. In the KSN viewing area, in District 8, Democratic Melanie Haas faces Republican Fred Postlewait. Democrat Betty Arnold has Republican Jason Carmichael challenging her bid for another term in District 8. The race in District 10 features Democrat Jeffrey Jarman running against Republican Debby Potter and Independent Kent Rowe.
