ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Election Day 2024 is here. It's been a contentious national election season, and locally, New Mexico could see some big changes. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders podcast, University of New Mexico Political Science Professor and KRQE Political Analyst, Gabe Sanchez, joins Chris and Gabby to break down the races to watch in this election. Sanchez provides perspective as a professional pollster and provides analysis of some of the candidates' strategies this season. Will a visit from Donald Trump impact voters or local candidates? How much do political ads matter? Locally, it's also the first time both the House and Senate face new voting maps after redistricting, and all 112 seats in the state legislature are up for grabs. How could the new maps reshape the state's political landscape? Sanchez also responds to research published by UNM referring to a potential decline in population impacting New Mexico's congressional seats. Could the state lose a congressional seat in the next 10 years? "Most folks aren't really conscious of this, but New Mexico is one of the oldest in terms of median age demographics across the country already, and really trending towards an older segment of the population moving forward," Sanchez explained. "That's driven a lot by, unfortunately, a lot of our young people leaving the state because they don't see the economic future for themselves, their career opportunities maybe looking brighter in other states. And that's really fueling a lot of the underlying demographic trends that we see." Listen to the full discussion above for a full breakdown of the topics.
