ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A workforce development proposal is at a standstill following a vote from the Albuquerque City Council. 2 New Mexico communities land on ‘food cities’ list by WalletHub Under the Apprenticeship Empowerment Ordinance, contractors for public projects would be required to use state registered apprentices for at least 10% of the total labor. At Monday's city council meeting, some contractors and tradesmen said the proposal would encourage more people to pursue trades, but others argued the mandate would hurt more than it would help. One of the bill's sponsors, Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn, argued the bill would expand the workforce and help get people off the streets. The ordinance was withdrawn on a five to four vote.
