ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – On a night when three-point buckets where hard to come by from the home team, Richard Pitino's New Mexico Lobos rode the inside game of Nelly Junior Joseph to a 91-84 victory over Nicholls Monday night. UNM women’s basketball drop home opener Junior Joseph was unstoppable, scoring 28 points and 16 rebounds. "We were off shooting tonight and so my coach was like you should try and pass the ball inside to Nelly. So, I just see what was going to happen and they kept passing me the ball and I did my job," said Nelly Junior Joseph." Junior Joseph was one of five Lobos in double figures. For the first time in 27 years three Lobos had double-doubles on the same night. Donovan Dent scored 15 points and dished out 11 assists, while Mustapha Amzil scored 13 points with 13 rebounds. Nicholls was led by Rob Brown III who scored 23 points, shooting 6 of 12 from the three point line. As a team Nicholls shot 41 percent from the arc, hitting 15 of 37 shots. The Lobos shot a woeful 19% from deep, making 7 of 36 attempts. The long range shots kept Nicholls in the game, making it tight down the stretch. "The offensive side of it, we can talk about missed threes until we are blue in the face, but 91 points is enough points," said UNM head coach Richard Pitino. "We got to play better defense. We got to work on it by Friday and a lot of good stuff to see in a tough test from Nicholls." The Lobos will face UCLA Friday on a neutral court in Las Vegas, Nevada.
