YARMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) -- A historic Massachusetts inn destroyed in a fire on Sunday night is under investigation.
Yarmouth Fire Department said around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, a passerby reported a structure fire at the site of the former Anthony’s Cummaquid Inn on Route 6A. The inn has been closed for several years.
The fire, which was visible from Route 6A, moved quickly through the structure and threatened nearby buildings and areas of brush that were engulfed in flames, according to authorities.
According to Yarmouth property tax records, the restaurant on the property was built in 1910 and the residential portions of the site were built in the 1950s and 1960s.
The fire department originally brought in crews from Barnstable, Dennis, and Hyannis, and an ambulance from Harwich. When a second alarm was ordered, more crews from Brewster, Dennis and Hyannis were called, and crews worked for hours to get the fire under control.
Since the fire was so large, fire officials said the water departments from both Yarmouth and Barnstable increased water capacity at the scene.
There were no known civilian injuries, according to Yarmouth fire officials, but one fire department member was evaluated on scene for a minor injury.
