NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WAVY) — The Nags Head Police Department issued a warning on social media saying it has received a higher call volume for sick raccoons. A biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission who is working with police confirmed some of those raccoons tested positive for distemper. Distemper is a viral disease that can infect both domestic dogs and wild animals such as foxes, coyotes and skunks. The disease is spread when animals have direct contact with body fluids or droppings from an infected animal. 10 On Your Side spoke with animal experts when dead raccoons were found in Virginia Beach in July. The experts advise pet owners to make sure their pet’s vaccines are up-to-date. The post from the Nags Head Police Department also warned to keep children away from sick raccoons because, as the disease progresses, the animals can become aggressive if you get too close. To discourage raccoons from coming into your yard, you can: Feed pets indoors or bring their bowls inside overnight Ensure garbage cans are closed and secure Put garbage cans in a closed garage or shed If you have a compost pile, make sure it is covered in bins In Nags Head, if you see a sick raccoon in your yard, contact the police department. You can also contact your local Animal Control department. If the raccoon is dead, police advise to bury it deep enough that pets will not dig it up.
