Slightly Cooler Weekend
Discussion:
We’re starting this Election Day with cloudy skies, fog and drizzle across the region. Wedge remains locked in place leading to more on and off showers through the afternoon with highs reaching the low 70s. You might need the rain jacket, if you’re heading out to the polls, but not much else weatherwise will hold you back from voting today. The wedge will break down as high pressure moves further away from the northeast coast. This will lead to winds out of the south increasing temps into the mid 70s and tropical moisture funneling into the region — the best rain chances we have seen in weeks. A cold front will pass through the region late week, leading to slightly drier weather as high pressure builds in Friday. Still an isolated shower or two can’t be ruled out with highs still above average in the upper 60s to lower 70s through the weekend.
Tropical Storm Rafael is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane within the next 24-36 hours in the Caribbean. It will pass over western Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico mid-week. There will be no direct impacts for the Carolinas, but we could still see some moisture transported from the Gulf due to Rafael lead to more rain late week. The environment in the Gulf will not be conducive for further development. Waters are much cooler than they were even a few weeks ago, and shear is high which will help to rough up the structure of the storm as it moves toward Louisiana this weekend.
