Could Tropical Storm Rafael impact Louisiana? It's expected to become a hurricane.
Nov 05, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Tropical Storm Rafael is becoming a better-organized storm after developing on Monday afternoon according to satellite imagery.
Rafael will likely strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane over the next day. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Jamaica and a tropical storm watch, warning and hurricane warning are in effect for Cuba.
As of 6 a.m. CDT Tuesday, the tropical storm has maximum sustained wind speeds of 60 mph and is moving to the northwest at 13 mph. It has a minimum central pressure of 993 mb.
Rafael is in a better environment in the Caribbean to continue gaining strength. It is expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico later this week. There’s enough wind shear in place and drier air over the Gulf that could cause Rafael to weaken rapidly.
There is a probability of rain and breezy winds, but it is unclear if the storm will make landfall in Louisiana. It is also unclear if the storm will still maintain its structure and strength once it enters the Gulf. We’ll have to see how all these variables interact with each other as we head into the middle of this week and the end of this week.
