Garza defeated challenger Jeremy Sylestine during a contentious Democratic primary election in March with nearly 67% of the vote. During the primary, Garza campaigned on his progressive reforms to the criminal justice system, including gun violence prevention programs. Betts' priorities include partnering with law enforcement partnerships and separating politics and the justice system, according to his website.
