Cowboys QB Dak Prescott likely headed to IR with hamstring injury, Jerry Jones says

Dak Prescott is likely headed to injured reserve, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday, which would keep the quarterback out a minimum of four games.
An IR stint would guarantee that Prescott — who suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday’s 27-21 loss in Atlanta — misses the Cowboys’ home game against the Giants on Thanksgiving.
“It’s [an] extended period of time here,” Jones said on Dallas’ 105.3 The Fan. “I wouldn’t dare make a prediction when it could be. It’s likely we’ll IR him, so we’ll see kind of how his rehab goes.”
Jones’ update came a day after head coach Mike McCarthy said Prescott would miss this Sunday’s home game against the Philadelphia Eagles. McCarthy acknowledged that conversations about Prescott going on IR would likely occur as the Cowboys gathered more information.
Prescott, 31, suffered the injury during a five-yard run late in the third quarter against the Falcons. He did not play in the fourth quarter as the Cowboys fell to 3-5.
“I felt it when I was getting up from the run,” Prescott said. “I can’t even say that I felt it running. Maybe something on the tackle. Yeah, I don’t know, but when I was standing up, I felt something actually. Didn’t think it was much. You get tackled. It’s a physical game. A lot of times you feel different things and they kind of go away.”
Cooper Rush, who is 5-1 in his career as a starter, is set to start Sunday, with Trey Lance serving as the backup.
Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million contract — the biggest in NFL history — before the season.
He is set to become the latest Cowboys star to miss time with an injury, a list that also includes pass rushers DeMarcus Lawrence (foot) and Micah Parsons (ankle), who have been out since Week 4, and cornerback DaRon Bland (foot), who has not played this season.
Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb suffered a shoulder injury during Sunday’s game, but he returned and caught a 2-point conversion. His issue is not considered to be serious.
Sunday’s loss dropped the Cowboys 3.5 games behind the NFC East-leading Washington Commanders (7-2) and three games behind the Eagles (6-2) for second place.
They still made an addition before Tuesday’s trade deadline, acquiring second-year wide receiver Jonathan Mingo and a seventh-round pick from the Carolina Panthers for a fourth-round pick, according to NFL Network.
A 2023 second-round pick out of Ole Miss, Mingo has made 55 receptions for 539 yards and has not scored a touchdown in 24 NFL games. The 23-year-old has two years left on his rookie contract after this one.
