FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Fresno City College hosted a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caravan on Monday.
The event allowed community college students to learn more about Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
It featured various activities, guest speakers, and a Divine 9 presentation by African American fraternities and sororities.
Elizabeth Fagbule is one of the hundreds of students who attended the event.
“I just like the culture. It's the music, the vibe. It's just really nice," she smiled. "We're just looking around, seeing the options for the colleges that they have here, specifically HBCUs, and just getting educated about the options that we have as Black students.”
Fresno City College Interim President Dr. Kim Armstrong explained the event is the result of a partnership between The California Community College Chancellor’s Office and HBCUs across the country.
She said, “To have that connection at HBCUs, which provide stellar and rigorous academic programs, is a wonderful partnership that California's provided for our students.”
Dr. Armstrong said African American students are underrepresented in higher education.
She explained the event aims to help kids explore the possibilities of transferring to an HBCU in order to create more opportunities for African American college students to further their education.
“HBCUs were founded right out the Emancipation Proclamation to provide access to a group of people who were denied education. Community colleges were founded for the same purpose of allowing people who were disenfranchised didn't have the money to go to college. So, our missions are the same and we together are going to make a difference in educating a diverse workforce," she said.
Officials said around 20 HBCUs attended the event.
