Election Day 2024: What to know before you vote
Nov 05, 2024
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The polls open for the 2024 election in just a couple of hours at 7:00 a.m. but some may open earlier.
Where to vote on Election Day in Massachusetts
Before you go to the polls, check to make sure you are registered to vote. You can do that on the Secretary of State's website or by contacting your city or town clerk's office.
You can also figure out where your local polling place is through that website or in person.
In Massachusetts, voters are not required to show photo ID, but one may be requested to show theirs for a few reasons. If someone is voting for the first time, someone has been deemed an inactive voter, someone is casting a provisional or challenged ballot, or the poll worker has reasonable suspicion to make that request.
All registered voters have a designated polling location where you must cast your ballot. If you arrive at the polls and your name is not on the voter's list, you have a few options to make sure your vote still counts.
First, check with a poll worker to ensure you are at the correct polling location. If you are, ask your poll worker to contact your local election office to confirm your eligibility. In those cases, or if you were asked to show your ID and forgot it at home, you can vote using what's called a provisional ballot.
Once your local election office confirms that you're registered, or when you bring your ID to your polling place before it closes, your ballot will be counted.
As part of early voting and mail-in ballots, over 1.7 million voters have already cast their ballots in Massachusetts.
If you still have a mail-in ballot, election officials are urging you not to send that ballot by mail on Tuesday. Though technically valid, Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin says ballots won't arrive in time to be counted. Mail-in ballots can be dropped off in a ballot drop box outside a municipal building or at a local election office. Secretary Galvin said you cannot drop a mail-in ballot off at a polling location.
All polling locations will close at 8 pm.
