Fresno County Clerk encouraged by early voter turnout

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — Lines flowed out the door at polling sites across Fresno County Monday.
Fresno County Clerk James Kus says, as of that afternoon, they had a 35% voter turnout with 160,000 mail-in ballots and 10,000 in-person votes.
“We're really busy downtown today, and, really, that's true across the county. We're having a great turnout,” Kus said.
Hundreds stood in line throughout the day as staff worked to get them in and out of the polling station as quickly as possible.
“If you want to vote in person [Tuesday], I really strongly suggest coming out earlier in the day. We do have live VBM (vote by mail) where you can have it tabulated at the bus center, but you will have to wait in line and sign in. So you're not going to speed up your process very much,” Kus said.
He says the best way to save time is to drop off mail-in ballots in one of the 67 drop boxes across the county. However, for those who want to vote in person, he recommends showing up early as anyone who gets in line after 8:00 p.m. will not be able to vote.
He also warns against wearing electioneering material within 100 feet of the voting location.
Kus says they had to bring on hundreds of employees to process the high ballot volume this year, and he appreciates people for being patient as they wait in line.
“We've got all of our full-time staff, of course, but we've added over 450 extra help staff. They’re helping out in the field, helping at our warehouse, traveling around the county to pick up materials,” Kus said.
As busy as his team is, he says the workload makes him excited.
“It's wonderful to see everyone coming out doing their civic duty,” Kus said.
He says he is proud to see so many of his Fresno County neighbors casting their ballots.
