Driver crashes off cliff in North County

CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A driver crashed their car over a cliff Monday in Carlsbad following a police pursuit that was called off, authorities said.
A police officer first saw the vehicle collide into a fence around 4 p.m. in the 2400 block of Impala Drive, Denise Ramirez with the Carlsbad Police Department said in a news release.
A police pursuit ensued after the vehicle left the scene recklessly following the collision, according to authorities.

When the vehicle refused to stop for officers, the pursuit was later called off at Palomar Airport Road just west of Avenida Encinas because of safety concerns.
Officers then saw the vehicle speeding and driving off the roadway in the 5500 block of Carlsbad Boulevard, per law enforcement. The vehicle went off a cliff and landed on the beach.
First responders took the driver, who suffered significant injuries, to the hospital. The driver is expected to survive despite sustaining life-threatening injuries, police said.
Authorities do not believe drugs and alcohol were factors in the collision.
