WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- A parking lot on Central and Oliver filled with hundreds of mourners, all honoring the memory of Donald Williams, who was shot and killed Halloween night. Friends, family and neighbors all remember what they loved about Donald and the bittersweet lessons that could be learned from his death. Donald's aunt, Crystal Weatherspoon, drove from Texas for the memorial. According to her, the crowd served as some semblance of a reminder that Donald's memory won't go away anytime soon. "Look at all these people that came out to support you," she said. Each person held a balloon, symbolizing what they loved about the 13-year-old. From the crowd, cries of "Let them go for my baby" echoed as they were released. WPD seeks public’s help to find person in Halloween homicide investigation "Donald was such a good kid ... It breaks my heart because now I can't hear him say, 'Hey auntie,' when I walk in the door," Weatherspoon said. Speaking just before the balloons were released, Pastor Odell Harris Jr. said he's been to dozens of events like this one—far too many times for his taste. "I don't want to bury another child ... It just gets worse and worse, man. Every time we lose another young person, like I told them tonight, our future is becoming our past," Harris Jr. said. The organization Cure Violence also spoke at the event. Their mission is to provide resources to young people in rough situations. They say all you can do after a tragedy like Williams' loss is take the right lessons from their story. "These kids deserve to grow up; they deserve to have healthy communities, safe places to go, and this is a situation where we need the whole community to come together," Cure Violence Program Manager Bracquael Chamberlain said. They're dedicated to building a better future, but everybody at Donald Williams' memorial is left with only memories. "[The turnout] brings joy to my heart, but it still hurts," Weatherspoon said. "Because now we have to go home and cry. Now we have to go home and be sad. We have to plan a funeral we didn't want to."
