STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — Chris Davis was introduced as the next athletic director at Georgia Southern University Monday.  They held a ceremony at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center. They rolled out the red carpet, Davis received a police escort, the band was on hand playing the fight song as he entered the arena and the cheerleaders were on hand as well. Several people spoke during the program, like Head Football Coach Clay Helton, as Davis is now Helton's new boss. School President Kyle Marrero also spoke and then Davis took the podium and shared why this moment meant so much to him. "Earn every moment," Davis said. "And I'm a big believer in trying not to manufacture success but be who you are and be you every single day.  And so, when Dr. Marrero, I will say when Dr. Marrero called me, said, 'Hey, Chris, I'd like to officially offer you the opportunity to be our director of athletics.'  I mean, that was real, you know, and it was a really cool moment. I was actually standing inside Allen E. Paulson Stadium." Marrero said, "It's about 1:30, 2:00 in the morning by now. And getting a bus in New Jersey right then. And trying to figure out what we're going to do with these players. Chris immediately says open the door to the plane. He's getting out. They open it. He goes down, he catches the bus drivers. Jim Harbaugh is getting in the plane for Michigan." After the ceremony, WSAV asked Marrero if there was a moment he knew Davis could lead this department and he reflected on a moment four years ago when the Georgia Southern played army. The team's plane had mechanical issues and Davis stepped in to save the day.  “He's stopping the bus drivers,” Marrero said. “He's pulling his credit card out, going, I'm going to hire you all. You all stay here. We need to find our players. He gets their buses to leave, gets us to a hotel an hour later, gets pizza from I don't know where at three or four in the morning.
