UNM women's basketball drop home opener

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – University of New Mexico women's basketball coach Mike Bradbury knew his team would get a tough challenge from Northern Arizona University. He just didn't know how it would unfold. With 2.4 seconds left on the clock, NAU's Sophie Glancey hooked in two of her team-high 17 points to send the Lobos to an 80-78 season-opening loss.
NAU had one of its best seasons in program history last year and returned most of its players. The Lumberjacks are also the preseason favorite in the Big Sky Conference.
UNM had its chances. Lobo newcomer Destinee Hooks, who scored a game-high 21 points, missed the first of two free throws late in the game that would have given the Lobos a one-point lead with less than three seconds to play.
The Lobos also could not hold a double-digit lead in the second half that swelled to 13 points. Three Lobos scored in double figures as Viane Cumber joined Hooks, scoring 14 points. Newcomer Alyssa Hargrove scored 12 points in the loss.
Despite the setback, Coach Bradbury was able to get questions answered about his team which only has four returning players from last season. Bradbury liked how his team competed. "Like, you can see where it can be because we haven't played a team of this caliber, which this team would be in the top three of four of our league," said Bradbury. "Well, that's where we are use to being. So, now I know that that's realistic."
UNM will host Morehead State on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
