RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department is asking for the public's assistance after a man was shot and killed outside of a Richmond jail Monday afternoon. A police detective was in the parking lot of the Richmond City Justice Center at approximately 12:04 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4 when he heard a gunshot nearby. The detective, who decided to investigate, quickly found a man with a gunshot wound in the jail's parking lot near the roadway. "[When] I catch the bus, you always see stuff like that," said city resident Gerald Hunter. "There's a lot of shootings and a lot of this and that — it's the street." PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Man shot, killed outside Richmond City Jail, police investigating Hunter has lived in Richmond for more than 30 years. He told 8News he isn't phased by the incident -- rather, he's worried for the future generation. “You got kids who want to come out outside on a good day and play — what do they see [as] soon as they come out the door? Gunfire," Hunter said. A personal matter had Sherief Greene of South Carolina to Richmond -- but the news of the shooting only added to his stress. “I hear a lot of things going on in Richmond," Greene said. "Earlier this morning, I heard somebody's child got shot and that's what made me think a lot -- whether or not my child [could] get caught up in crossfire, or anything like that.” Similarly, Hunter told 8News that he hopes people remember that violence like this can impact anyone. "The very thing that happened [here could happen] to anyone, you know?" he said. "Anywhere you stand, anywhere you go. You just got to thank God you're still alive." Police did not find a suspect at the scene but were able to take down information from several witnesses, who police say gave investigators details that could help them locate such a suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Major Crimes Detective K. Hyde at 804-646-3613. This is a developing story, stick with 8News both on air and online for updates.
