Providence College Press Release PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s basketball team defeated NCAA Division II Mercy College, 64-32, in its 2024-25 season opener on Nov. 4 in Providence, R.I. Olivia Olsen paced the Friars with 12 points and 10 rebounds. 1ST QUARTER: • Mercy led 3-2 at the first media timeout (4:59) as the teams shot a combined 2-14 from the field. • Providence led by as many as six (16-10) with 1:25 remaining in the frame after a 9-5 scoring run. • The Friars led 16-12 at the break. • Providence shot 40-percent in the opening quarter (6-15), while Mercy converted 31-percent of its shots (5-16). 2ND QUARTER: • Providence started the second quarter with a 10-0 scoring advantage to take a 26-12 lead with 4:22 on the clock. • The Friars outscored the Mavericks 18-9 overall in the quarter to carry a 34-21 lead into halftime. • Olivia Olsen led all scorers with 10 points in the first half. She also hauled in six rebounds. 3RD QUARTER: • The Friars extended their lead to 49-27 through the completion of the third quarter. • Brynn Farrell (five) and Sarah Bandoma (four) combined to score nine of the Friars’ 15 points in the third quarter. 4TH QUARTER: • Providence started the fourth with an 8-0 run to force a Mercy timeout. The run helped push the Friars’ lead to 30 with 7:19 to play (57-27). • The Friars outscored the Mavericks 15-5 in the fourth quarter to claim the 64-32 victory. NOTES: • Olsen recorded her 17th double-double of her career, finishing the game with a game-high 12 points and 10 boards in just 16 minutes of action. • Farrell completed the night with 11 points on 5-6 shooting and added three boards, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot. • Grad transfer MacKayla Scarlett converted her first two shot attempts as a Friar, knocking down consecutive three pointers from the left wing in the first quarter. She finished the game with eight points. • Emily Archibald added four points, seven rebounds, two assists and a game-high four steals. • As a team, Providence recorded 15 steals. It marks the most thefts in a single game since collecting 16 vs. Brown on Nov. 15, 2023. • Providence outscored Mercy 29-8 in points off turnovers and 36-12 in the paint. • Providence held Mercy to single-digit points in three of four quarters. • The Friars improved to 31-20 in season openers all-time and 2-0 under second-year Head Coach Erin Batth. • Additionally, Providence improved to 35-16 all-time in home openers. WHAT’S NEXT: • Providence returns to action on Friday, Nov. 8 against non-conference foe Columbia. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
