PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — While all eyes are on the presidential race, control of the Senate is at stake, and that includes a seat in Virginia, as Republican challenger Hung Cao looks to unseat incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine, who has held the seat for the past 12 years. "I feel good that there is a finish line in sight," Kaine said. "It's been long, it's been intense, it's been fun." For Cao, he said "it's one of those things — the anticipation, it's like Christmas morning. You're hoping you get the Red Rider BB gun." Their paths leading up until this moment have been different, as Kaine, before serving in the Senate, was the mayor of Richmond, lieutenant governor and governor. "I've worked really hard to earn the trust of Virginians in my time in public life," Kaine said, "and I've done it by working across the aisle and working across the Commonwealth and delivering results for Virginia communities." Cao is a veteran — a retired Navy captain serving with special operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. "We've both been paid by the American people for 30 years," Cao said. "He has millions of dollars to show for it, and I have scars." Cao also trails Kaine in pre-election polling. But both are confident in what they bring to the table. They encourage everyone to cast their ballot, and not let today's polarized political climate keep them from voting. "Everyone should participate secure in the knowledge that your vote will be counted and Virginia's voice will be heard," Kaine said. Said Cao: "I think that people are gonna come out and vote with their consciousness and vote for a change." While early voting numbers are promising, both know it's a fight to the finish.
