El Paso, Texas (KTSM) – One thing I absolutely love is finding a new brand of pocket knives to explore and learn about. Sure, I have my favorites. I joke that my holy trinity of knives are Buck, Victorinox (Swiss Army) and Cold Steel. Rough Edge EDC: Hitting trifecta with Red Beard Knife and Tool Rough Rider, the house brand for knife retail giant Smoky Mountain Knife Works, is creeping up and threatening to crash that group and make it a quartet. Money has been tight for months, and I have only bought a couple of new knives since the spring.  Luckily, I have gotten some gifts and won a few giveaways, giving me some new knives and some fresh grist for my column. Rough Edge EDC: New Buck knife won’t leave side anytime soon Monday night, I came home from work for lunch (really dinner) and imagine my surprise, a new pocket knife was in the mail. I had thought this one was going to arrive later in the week and I would miss my deadline for my column. What I got was a cool folding knife from Petrified Fish. Some of my buddies in the knife community – most notably Big Red EDC – have featured this company on their YouTube channels or on social media. I have to admit I’ve been intrigued just by the name. Petrified Fish PF-818 Photo by Dave Burge/KTSM Last week, I got in the mood to order a modern knife, but didn't want to break the bank. So I decided it was time to give Petrified Fish a whirl. What I ordered and got in less than a week was the company’s PF-818 knife. Petrified Fish is a Chinese company with a reputation for making some great modern knives at a budget price. My order was shipped from the Chicago area. Note: This is not really a full-on review. Rather, it is just some ramblings and first impressions. Rough Edge EDC: Exploring Buck’s ‘deep tracks’ in their catalog This knife comes in with a roughly 3 ½-inch spear-point blade and gorgeous red micarta handles. It came razor sharp from the factory. I almost cut myself just taking my first look at it. Its blade is made from D2 steel, which has a reputation for being an excellent budget steel.  Its action, fit and finish and overall look give it the feel of a knife that punches above its weight class, so to speak. It definitely feels like a knife that would cost $50 or $60 instead of the $27 I paid. It opens using a flipper tab and uses an old-fashioned liner lock, which is right up my alley. As for the name, PF- 818, Petrified Fish tends to give its knives names that include a number. Sure, it’s impersonal, but after taking a look right out of the box, I would like to explore a whole sea of Petrified Fish knives. If you look around your house, though, you probably have stuff from China you don’t even know about. I’ve made this point before, too. All sorts of U.S.-based knife companies do all or part of their manufacturing in China to save costs. Even the iconic American brand Buck Knives makes some of its knives in China. Rough Edge EDC: Remembering a boyhood favorite — folding hunter knives Plus, my all-time favorite company, Olight, is based in China. Not only does Olight make fantastic flashlights, they excel in customer service, a thing many American companies seem to be forgetting about. One tip I will pass along. When I deal with any company overseas -- whether Chinese, French or Turkish -- I pay through PayPal and don’t give them direct access to my bank account. Anyway, here is a link to the Petrified Fish website. Here is a link to the PF-818 knife. And here is a link to the YouTube channel from my good friend and mentor Big Red EDC. You can catch his live chat, cleverly called SKL, most Saturday nights at 11 p.m. Mountain time on YouTube. Here are some other YouTube channels that I watch pretty regularly in no particular order.
